TTT in Krakow
I know this is already out there -- and there actually is a reason I've been slow to add it to the main page -- but for those who have not yet heard, The Two Towers Live will be playing in Krakow Poland on May 23 as part of the Second Film Music Festival. Click here for more info. With any luck, I'll have more to say about this in the near future!

Fran Walsh Joins The Music of LOTR
Truth be told, I don't put much stock in dream analysis. I've always been prone to a nightmare or two, and maybe a revelation here or there. I've credited this to nothing more than an overactive or overworked mind.
But last night was different. I dreamt I was in New Zealand and that a lightning storm was approaching. Reaching down from an unusually clear blue sky, thick, bright bolts struck closer and closer. Startled, I shook awake and lay awake in my bed attempting to reorient myself. After 30 seconds a faint buzzing sound caught my attention. Although silenced, my phone was vibrating to indicate an email had just arrived. "Well," I thought, "I'll just check my email to clear my mind, and then get back to sleep."
I never got back to sleep.
For a few months now Fran Walsh and I have been passing emails back and forth in an attempt to line up our schedules properly. I had asked her to pen a short foreword for The Music of the Lord of the Rings. Anything that she thought was appropriate: musings on Tolkien and music, memories of working with Howard on the films... anything, really. I trusted her implicitly.
This morning's email was from her. The foreword was complete. A sweet note from Fran read:
Hi Doug,
Pete and I think your book reads really well and found it to be completely engaging! Congratulations!
Pete and I think your book reads really well and found it to be completely engaging! Congratulations!
Following was a beautifully written, approximately 1,000-word foreword covering... well, you'll see. :)
To Fran, my lightning bolt out of the blue, I send my limitless and most sincere gratitude.
After nearly 7 years of work, the last piece of the book is now in place.

Inside Source
This month's Film Score Monthly Online claims to have an inside source offering a mini-review of/thoughts on The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films.
FSMO: Any updates on Doug Adams’ The Music of The Lord of the Rings Films book, and how have you been involved in that process?
HS: I’ve been working with Doug over the years and he’s done a fantastic job, I mean, the book is incredible. It’s due to be released by the end of the year and I think it’s on course…probably in the fall.
Those generous words actually come from a pretty reliable source--Howard Shore, himself! It's all part of a very interesting piece by Eric Giordano that discusses the future of the new Howe Records. Though the piece is for paying subscribers only, it's well worth your money. FSM, for those unaware, is my once and future stomping ground and, for my money, the most consistently credible source of film music discussion available today.

A quick heads-up here, Amazon has apparently gotten back into the TTT:CR business. They're now listing the set as "Usually ships in 1 to 3 weeks," and are now accepting orders... at 10% off no less. If interested, see the links at right... you know the drill.
Back soon, I promise.
-Doug
[UPDATE: TTT:CR is again available (as of 3/14). Order as you see fit!]

Shore at Yale Tea
Yale's Master Tea Tuesday yesterday (3/3) featured an hour-long conversation with Howard Shore that covered everything from his work on The Lord of the Rings to his first musical experimentations as an eleven-year-old.
See Yale's write up here.
(A word of caution, Yale lists The Spider as Shore's next project, though it's still not a done deal.)
